El Modena earns first Century victory
BREA - Ryan Arballo rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns, and Brian Stiefel passed for 225 yards and another score as El Modena defeated Brea Olinda, 28-14, in a Century League game Friday night at Brea Olinda High.
El Modena (3-6, 1-3) opened a 21-7 lead with 7:10 remaining in the third quarter as Arballo dashed 36 yards for his second touchdown of the evening.
Following a fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff, Stiefel took five plays before connecting with Jordan Brown on a 19-yard scoring toss.
Brea Olinda (2-7, 0-4) made things close after the Vanguards took a 14-point lead, with Randy Liggins scoring from a yard out with 3:34 left in the quarter to shave El Modena’s advantage in half.
Another fumble doomed the Wildcats, as Liggins gave up the ball to Kevin Duran on the Vanguards 32-yard line with just under five minutes left in the game.
Stiefel clinched the victory with a 31-yard touchdown two plays after the fumble.
Arballo’s first touchdown, coming on a 1-yard run, sent El Modena to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but a 43-yard touchdown run by Juan Guerrero pushed Brea Olinda into a tie game two minutes later.
Kyle Calvo led the Vanguard receiving corps with 10 catches for 123 yards.
